As you are doubtless aware there is a Search facility (in Messages> Friends in top right icons). It will only allow searches for names that 'start with'. So, were you looking for me, you could enter 'ehl' in the text field (you need to use at least 3 characters). But if, say, you were not sure if it was 'ehlanna' or 'elhanna' you were looking for? Ok, two searches and you'd likely find me. However, as the number of names returned is limited you may not see the name you are looking for listed so you may need to add more characters to the search to narrow down the list. All well and good if you know the name, but if you are not quite sure of the spelling then ... well, it can be a little daunting!
I recently tripped over the fact that it looks like the system will treat an underscore character '_' as a wildcard. What this means is you could enter 'e__anna' (that's TWO underscores there) as the search text and if it was spelled ehlanna OR elhanna it should (could, depending on numbers found ...) return the match.
